Created by Henri Robert and was launched in 1955. It was the first men’s fragrance from Chanel.
Initially launched as ‘A Gentleman’s Cologne’ in the UK, ‘Chanel for Men’ in the USA, and ‘Chanel Pour Monsieur’ in France. In 1989, it was relaunched with the name ‘Chanel Pour Monsieur’ worldwide.
It’s known for its understated elegance and is considered one of the classiest male scents around.
Pour Monsieur is a classic and sophisticated fragrance with a woody-chypre scent some of its eclectic scent notes include
: Lemon, Lemon Verbena, Orange, Neroli, Peony
: Ginger, Coriander, Cardamom, Basil
Vetiver, Oakmoss, White Cedar
On a personal note: this could be considered the first well-known businessmen perfume by Chanel. The scent of the moss, lemon, vetiver, and ginger seems like the most obvious scents of it. I can already imagine that there were plenty of male celebrities wearing this perfume during that period. I think the gentleman who wears it must be a man who always wears a suit and tie, with a handkerchief in the pocket and a gentle smile on his face. The original version of it uses more moss so the overall scent of it is very gentle, and elegant and won't bother other people, which makes me fall in love with this scent. I got another version later (maybe was launched around the 1980s). The most obvious changes of it is they reduced the ingredients of moss and added more lemon inside it. So the newer version smells kind of sour and not as elegant as the original one. I don't wanna try the modern version very much because I know that the soul of this perfume -- moss may have already disappeared from it due to the moss-forbidden rules on nowadays' perfume market. I will keep that original one with me forever and whenever I miss those old-period actors, I will just smell a little bit of it, to make me feel: that they are still surrounding me, like always.
